YORKSTONE PAVING
Yorkstone paving can be defined as "New York riven" "New York honed" or "old reclaimed York".
Supplied as Rectangular, Rectangular sawn, or random.
HONED OR SMOOTH FINISH: Honed yorkstone has a face that has been machined flat and smooth. Not polished (yorkstone will not polish although it is sometimes referred to as polished.) but nonetheless very even.
RIVEN OR NATURAL FACED YORKSTONE: As described in previous articles yorkstone is a layered or bedded stone. Riven yorkstone has been slit along its natural bed. The resultant finish is rough enough to give a slip resistant surface but stil smooth enough to walk on comfortably and safely.
OLD RECLAIMED YORKSTONE: Often called "old london york" is paving, possibly hundres of years old, lifted and resold. The ancient looking "character" finish can be extremely beautiful, especially when pressure washed. Expensive and heavy to lay nonetheless one of the best types of patio paving available.
RECTANGULAR SAWN TO SIZE YORKSTONE: Always "new yorkstone", Sawn york has been machine cut to accurate sizes, this gives a very smooth edge and smooth straight joints.
RECTANGULAR CHISELED EDGE YORKSTONE: Has as the name implies been cut to size by hand, the edge is slightly uneven, the accuracy of the size and squareness depending entirely on the skill of the mason. All old reclaimed york is chisel edged, and new york riven faced slabs with a chiseled edge are also readily available.
RANDOM (CRAZY PAVING) YORKSTONE: Has been cut by hand from natural shaped boulders, the edge is very uneven and random. Almost always "riven" finish to the surface.
